Fraud and telemarketing charges laid against five individuals
December 8th, 2012
The Competition Bureau announced on December 7 that fraud charges under the Criminal Code, and misleading advertising and deceptive telemarketing charges under the Competition Act have been laid against five individuals in connection with two Montreal telemarketing operations.
One of the operations promoted government grants to American citizens. The other promoted the sale of office supplies and medical kits to Canadian and American businesses. The two operations were shut down after a search in December 2006.
The Bureau investigated the two operations in partnership with the Centre of Operations Linked to Telemarketing Fraud (COLT), a joint forces operation involving the Competition Bureau, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Sûreté du Québec, the Montreal Police, the Canada Border Services Agency, the Department of Homeland Security (Immigration & Customs Enforcement), the US Postal Inspection Service, the US Federal Trade Commission, and the US Secret Service.
