AGM remembers The Honourable Roy McMurtry, K.C., 1932 – 2024
The lawyers and staff of Affleck Greene McMurtry LLP send our condolences to the family of The Honourable Roy McMurtry, K.C., who passed away recently, on March 18, 2024. Roy was the father of our former partner, Harry McMurtry. While Roy and his distinguished legal and public service career were always an inspiration to the lawyers of AGM, during Harry’s time at AGM Roy also became a friend of the firm.
Roy’s distinguished career included playing a key role as Attorney-General of Ontario in the negotiation and creation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and in the patriation of Canada’s constitution in 1982. After his tenure as Attorney-General, Roy represented Canada as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Later, Roy was appointed to the bench and in 1996, he became Chief Justice of Ontario – a position in which he served with great distinction until 2007. Roy’s impact on the administration of justice in Ontario and across Canada is significant and enduring. He will be missed.
